A LETTER TO SANTA
Happy Christmas Eve! Thank you for taking the time to read my articles, share them with others, and leave your thoughtful comments. Your support means the world to me. May the season bring you blessings and joy. Welcome to another edition of Nothing.
Christmas has always been my favourite holiday. Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved the excitement of new clothes, new shoes, colourful street decorations, the magic of church adornments, Christmas songs, and carol services. Time hasn’t dimmed my love for any of it. No matter my challenges, the Christmas season never fails to lift my spirits.
In that festive spirit, I decided to share a little something: a letter to Santa.
Dear Santa,
I hope this letter finds you well. Before I get into my requests, let’s address the elephant in the room. You’re a white man. Historically, your people colonized my ancestors, enslaved them, and subjected them to unspeakable treatment. But here’s the thing—we’ve forgiven you. Africans are resilient, compassionate, and forward-looking. If the roles had been reversed, I’m sure the guilt would still weigh heavily, much like the Germans’ relationship with history.
That said, we’ve embraced Christmas as a joyful holiday, and you, Santa, have become part of our tradition. So, I have a few requests in the spirit of the season.
1. For My Country:
Santa, I don’t know if this is within your power, but my country needs help—big help. With a population of over 250 million, we’ve lost something precious: patriotism. People no longer feel a sense of duty to our nation. Politicians prioritize their own interests, public servants see their roles as self-serving, and the elites exploit rather than uplift. Even the masses seem disconnected, resigned to a system that seems impossible to change.
Please help us find a way to restore patriotism in every heart. Let our leaders put the country before themselves. Inspire public servants to see their work as a calling, not a chore. Encourage the elites to invest in solutions rather than oppression. And for the common people—remind us that this is the only country we have. Let us cherish it, defend it, and work together to build a better future.
2. For My Generation:
Millennials and Gen Z have inherited a mess, Santa. The older generations have left us with economic struggles, environmental crises, and shattered mental health. Basic milestones, like independence, feel out of reach for many of us. While our parents were thriving at our age, many of us are still stuck in limbo, battling the consequences of decisions we didn’t make.
We need joy, Santa. Help us rediscover our purpose and resilience. Guide us as we tackle the enormous task of healing the economy and saving the planet.
3. For My Family, Friends, and Readers:
Finally, I ask for happiness and fulfilment for the people I care about: my family, my friends, and you—my readers. Let the joy of Christmas fill our hearts, inspire our actions, and remind us of the power of hope and love.
I know these are big requests, but you’re Santa, after all. If anyone can make a Christmas miracle happen, it’s you.
Thank you, Santa. And Merry Christmas to you too.
Warm regards,
K. Nakamoto
