Here we are again!
I genuinely appreciate everyone taking the time to read and share my articles—it truly means a lot.
Going forward, I will be writing under the pseudonym K. Nakamoto (yes, I have a soft spot for Shogun).
Recently, I wrote a full piece on The Lord of the Rings, but I scrapped it because it just didn’t feel right.
Writing is no easy task, let me tell you! But today, I’m shifting gears to explore the life of Louis XVI, the last king of France.
During Louis’s reign, France was divided into three distinct social classes:
- The Clergy
- The Nobles
- The Commoners (which included the bourgeoisie—the middle class—and the lower class)
Years of war had left France bankrupt, and in a desperate attempt to keep the kingdom afloat, Louis XVI increased taxes. The problem? Only the commoners bore the weight of these crushing taxes, while the clergy and nobility remained untouched.
To make matters worse, the price of bread soared, driving many to the brink of starvation. As legend has it, when Marie Antoinette, the queen, was told the people were hungry, she infamously quipped, "Let them eat cake."
Tensions boiled over into the French Revolution, and the biggest winners? The bourgeoisie. The revolution dismantled the monarchy, ending with Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette losing their heads—literally. Out of the chaos rose Napoleon Bonaparte, who swept in with promises of equal rights for all.
So, what’s the point of this story? Honestly, there isn’t one. This blog is about nothing.
But here’s something to think about: Taxes are flying all over the place where I live, too. We pay over 20 different taxes, with more still coming. Maybe there’s a connection between Louis’s France and my little corner of the world. Or maybe not.
After all, I did say this was about nothing.
